Babysitter who raped toddler gets life sentence
Santos Rivera, 26, was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday for raping a 23-month-old boy who he had been babysitting, according to the Dallas Morning News. Rivera regularly cared for the victim, who is now four years old, while the boy’s mother worked as a waitress. The mother’s roommate discovered Rivera assaulting the boy.
Rivera, who pled guilty to the crime, told the jury that he’d been sexually abused as a child himself, raped at age 7 when he was walking home from school. One of 12 children, Rivera did not tell his parents he’d been attacked, and left home six months later to live on the streets on his own.
Yet, Rivera’s personal history as a sexual assault victim and street kid did not sway the jury, who took just 40 minutes to unanimously sentence him to life in prison. If Rivera is paroled in 30 years, when he’ll first be eligible, he will be returned to his native El Salvador. He’s been living in the United States since 2003, but was ordered deported in 2005.
