As if driving while texting weren’t bad enough, walking while texting can be fatal, too.

A Florida teen has died from injuries sustained when he sauntered in front of a car on Sunday evening around 8 p.m., while he was preoccupied with his cell phone.

Christopher Cepeda, 14, and three friends were preparing to cross a road southwest of Orlando. The other kids saw a 1994 Buick approaching and stopped, but Cepeda, who was texting, did not, according to the Associated Press. The sheriff’s office said that the driver of the car will not likely be charged.

Pedestrian deaths have declined substantially since 1975, but still account for about 11 percent of all traffic fatalities in the United States, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. For more on the hazards of walking while texting, click here.
